We’re on Day 2 of an 8 day shoot, filming a 2 hour sales training Video for Dormer Tools. It’s going really well – we have a cast of 7 actors who have done a great job of learning a script that is, by necessity, fairly specialised.

Blackmagic ATEM 1

Having recently been asked to build a small High Definition multi-camera system for a client we have discovered how the Blackmagic ATEM 1 has significantly changed the playing field. Previously “entry level” would have meant poor quality and not very easy to use, but this unit was very good quality, and very easy to use with a multitude of useful facilities including chroma key that….just worked for under £1500 + VAT!

For companies or individuals producing web TV, Churches, theatre groups, Schools the Blackmagic ATEM 1 is a fully operational eight input vision mixer.

To put the system together we needed a couple of computer monitors with HDMI inputs, and found those on the internet for £130 each. The client had a spare PC and monitor which was perfect to run the switcher and the software control panel. Camera or device connectivity to the switcher is either 4 x HDMI inputs and 4 x SDI (BNC) plugs to connect, which means low cost consumer or more professional cameras with HDMI or SDI outputs. The quality from the Blackmagic ATEM 1 was outstanding when put to the test.

The audio feed to the device is via a breakout cable with XLR I/O and then the audio is embedded to the HDSDI output to a recording device.

Recording the output can be done in a number of different ways, Blackmagic do have a couple of options in the form of external SSD recorders, or you can feed a computer with editing software “capture or live ingest”. For this particular client we chose the Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio, with 480 gigs SSD.

It’s my 50th birthday today, and I’m spending it travelling via bike and train to a meeting in Kent with our long-time client, South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.

The Brompton folding bike is a gift from my father – an amazingly innovative design, and like CreationVideo, Brompton Bicycles are a Chiswick-based business.

The weather is gorgeous, a perfect spring day in London, and I must say I feel very fortunate to be doing a job that I love today – a perfect birthday!
